Less is More: Minimalist Decor for a Vintage Spring Home

Before we jump in, I want you to know that, as the word sometimes suggests, minimal decorating is not about having a bare, stark, or barren home. I mean, it can mean that if that’s what a person is trying to achieve.

However, in the instance that I’m talking about it, minimal decorating is about sourcing or choosing decor pieces that mean something and help your home to tell a story. It’s about using beloved and favorite decor items, that may have been found thrifted or at a vintage shop, in new ways. It’s about being really intentional and hand-picking each item with care.

With that, let’s get into a few key elements of minimal decorating for Spring.

Clean Lines and Open Spaces

When it comes to Spring home styling especially, it’s important to create visual ‘breathing room’. This can be achieved through paring down, de-cluttering, and strategic placement of decor items.

A good example of this decorating ideal can be seen on the wall shelf in my living room. I used favorite pieces from my milk glass collection to create a neutral display that feels light and airy. I think that, in the photo below, the essence of having space and allowing for room between decor items is shown in a lovely way.

Decluttering for Spring

I’ve always been a tidy person. I take after my mom in that way…and, truth be told, I love to clean. Decluttering, tidying up cupboards or closets, or deep cleaning neglected areas of my home is something that I can always get behind.

There are many benefits to having a clutter-free and clean home. For me, it ultimately comes down to my mental well-being. If my house is messy, dirty, or if the bathrooms haven’t been cleaned for a week, it totally messes with me. My desk has to be tidy in order for me to be able to do my work efficiently. The dishes need to be done before bed so that, in the morning, my kitchen is a clean slate and ready for a new day. You feel me??

When it comes to decor for Spring, I really love to pare down the items I use and make sure that everything feels light. No dark colors or heavy patterns here!

There are also a handful of decorating elements that I turn to year after year to make sure my home feels good.

Some of my best tips for decluttering Spring decor include:

  • Go through your Spring bin(s) at the start of the season. Make one pile of things to keep and one pile of things to donate.
  • Use what you already have, in new ways, instead of going out and buying new things.
  • Decorate with only items that you absolutely love. Everything else is just extra and can be donated.
  • Choose to utilize items that are versatile. Platters, bowls, plates, and pitchers can be used all over the house!

Intentional Decorating

The overarching theme, when it comes to minimal decorating, is the importance of being thoughtful with each decorative item. Like, be really picky. Take a few minutes and truly think about how you can use less decor this season.

For example, throughout my entire home for Spring, I only used decor pieces that have either been found thrifted or curated from vintage shops over the years. Those are the decor items that speak to me and help my space to tell a story. Everything else is just ‘noise’.

As I stated earlier, it’s all about being super intentional about what you are choosing to use in your spaces. I recently heard a saying… “less, but better.”

To me, that concept is the epitome of vintage decor. You see, minimalism and vintage go hand in hand because you don’t need to use more, more, more. The vintage items speak for themselves. Truly, decorating intentionally with the ‘less but better’ mindset is a simple way to go about styling each space of your home so that it all feels cohesive and beautiful but not over-done.

Vintage Finds with a Minimalist Approach: Quality Over Quantity

Each one of us has our own way of doing things, especially when it comes to decorating our homes. But isn’t that lovely?! The world would be so boring if we all did things the exact same!

For me personally, I always choose quality pieces over quantity. I would much rather have a few items to decorate with that are of superior quality over many low quality things.

When choosing to style your home with a minimalist aesthetic, it’s of utmost importance to select a few key, quality pieces that you can then use to build the rest of your display off of.

Quality Over Quantity

Vintage decor embodies the principle of sourcing high-quality, well made items.

I suggest focusing on items that are more neutral in color, have some texture to them, and have the ability to be used in multiple ways over the course of the year.

For example, vintage milk glass is a decor staple in my home. I never put it away! My milk glass collection is used all year round…I simply tweak it all to fit the seasons. For Spring, I styled a plethora of my collection with simple florals, pink ribbon, and natural elements such as moss and birds nests.

When you have versatile decor such as milk glass, ironstone, or neutral pottery, you’ll never have the need to constantly re-do or re-decorate.

Timeless Vintage Decor

It’s no secret that vintage items stand the test of time and transcend all trends. The lasting beauty of these classic designs cannot be compared to anything else.

Most of the pieces in my home have been found thrifted or sourced from vintage shops. Compiling decor in this way is not only budget-friendly but it’s also sustainable!

For Spring specifically, here is a comprehensive list of vintage decor that I turn to again and again!

Spring Color Palettes for Minimalist Decor: Subtle and Serene

Coming out of winter where there was just an abundance of bold colors and heavy textures, my whole being craves light and airy.

So, when decorating my home for Spring, I like to stick to cheery colors that are also more muted such as pastel hues, white, and cream. Natural tones such as light brown and Spring green are also a welcome sight!

Neutral Spring Colors

A good example of how I incorporated neutral Spring colors into my home this season is in the hall bath.

I combined a variety of ironstone pieces to create a calming yet cohesive look. A vintage wooden plaque was situated in front of the platters along with a giant peony flower to add warmth, interest, and movement to the display.

Soft Pastels

Muted pastel colors such as blush pink, pale blue, or minty green adds a touch of Spring without overwhelming the space. However, so that it doesn’t look like an Easter egg explosion, it’s important to use pastels sparingly and strategically.

On the small shelf in my entry, a handful of pastel-hued decor was used. But, because of the all-white backdrop, it’s not too much…just the right amount of Spring!

This decorating ideal can be used in many ways including:

  • tying pastel ribbons around vases, jars, or handles
  • using floral stems such as peony, tulips, dried flowers, or ranunculus
  • pastel Easter eggs can be scattered throughout a display for color and interest
  • nestling colored decorative bunnies amongst other decor
  • lining up a row of vintage books in pastel or neutral colors

Natural Tones

I think my favorite way to infuse Spring into my home is through highlighting the beauty of natural materials and earthy tones. Using organic elements for Spring decorating brings the essence of blooming flowers and green grass indoors!

Natural-toned elements such as wood (in the form of baskets), moss, bird’s nests, faux greenery stems, and pussy willows are all decorative items that I’ve used this season. In my opinion, these materials completely bring a display to life!

Incorporating Vintage Spring Decor Elements Minimally

Finally, let’s chat briefly about a few more decorative accessories that I used throughout my home this season.

Minimalist Floral Displays

Faux florals have come a long way in recent years (thank goodness!) and they are now my all-time favorite decor accessory to use.

A few stems of Spring flowers in a vintage vase, jar, or jug goes a long way. You can thrift vessels for just a few dollars! My advice here is that less is more. You don’t need to pack a vase to overflowing to create a lovely display. Keep it simple!

My favorite way of styling flowers for Spring is single-variety arrangements. There is such beauty to be had in just one type of flower arranged in a beloved vase!

On my dining table, I did just that. Using my very favorite ironstone pitcher, I simply placed a bouquet of white tulips inside. For a little more color, I placed the pitcher on top of a floral transferware plate. Then, to help ground the arrangement, I set it all on top of a vintage embroidered linen.

Voila! Instant table centerpiece without spending a dime.

Subtle Easter Accents

If you celebrate Easter, or just want to infuse a touch of cuteness into your home, there is a minimal way to do so!

I suggest using a few understated Easter decorations such as neutral eggs or bunny statues. These small-scale decor accessories can be placed mindfully without cluttering the space.

One way that I infused a little Easter is on the credenza. I thrifted this ironstone tureen a while back but it didn’t have the lid. My solution for using it this season was to fill the bottom of it with vintage white hankies then set a large moss bunny on top! It’s such a minimal look but I truly adore the pop of green against the white.

After all was said and done, I stepped back to view all of it. And you know what I noticed? I saw how much my soul was longing for Spring.

Since I always let my heart guide and dictate my decorating, it’s so evident that every inch of me was just yearning for warm weather, sunshine, and flowers. From the bright and light hues, airy textures, pink florals, and beloved vintage decor, these are the things I love.

This can apply to just about any area of life, but when decorating your space, try getting out of your head and into your heart. Your heart will always guide you to what it needs.
