Vintage Valentine’s Day Hutch Decor with Thrifted Finds
Hello, guys! Welcome, or welcome back to the blog. I’m thrilled to have you here!
We’re chatting all things valentine today, specifically vintage valentine items. If you’ve been around for any length of time, you may remember that I’m not super into red and pink styled together.
Below is a comprehensive decor guide along with a few of my top tips when it comes to styling vintage valentine decor in a hutch and beyond!
Where to Find Vintage Valentine Decor
I think you know what I’m going to say, right??
Thrift stores! Thrift stores are my go-to place for any kind of seasonal decor. There is an over-abundance of vintage decor, as well as more modern pieces, that people decided they no longer needed. Plus, it’s SO cheap!
However, other places to look for vintage valentine day decor can include:
- FB Marketplace
- Etsy
- vintage shops or antique malls
- estate sales
Favorite Decor Pieces to Use When Styling a Hutch for Valentine’s Day
There are a handful of decor items that I turn to year after year when it comes to seasonal styling.
For Valentine’s Day, I like to stick to neutral colors so that the valentine specific decor, such as red and pink hearts, have their place in the spotlight. And, in this way, the display as a whole isn’t too bright. It’s a minimal valentine vignette, if you will.
Below are some of the vintage decor pieces that I used this year:
- ironstone platters
- brown floral dishes
- ironstone bowls, plates, and creamers
- milk glass
- ironstone pitchers
- vintage hankies and lace linens
And, as you can see, I also incorporated a handful of non-vintage decor elements.
Some of these items include:
- pink and white wooden hearts
- fabric hearts
- pink velvet ribbon
Elegant Vintage Valentine Decor Styled in the Hutch
Ever since purchasing my hutch a few years ago, decorating it for different seasons and holidays has truly become one of my favorite pastimes. I find it super relaxing to play with my thrifted decor finds, ‘putzing’ and experimenting with fun ways of decorating it all.
Let me start by saying that, before I decorated my hutch for Valentine’s Day, I had it styled for the winter season. And, as such, I did not want to take that all out and start over because it’s still very much winter here in the tundra. So, I decided to keep all of my winter decor inside and simply make a little more space for the valentine elements.
However, my fear was that the green trees and vintage green dishes paired with the red would make it look to Christmas-y. But, after adding in the pink hearts and ribbon, I think it totally works.
So, with that said, let’s get into how I styled the hutch for Valentine’s Day! For each idea, I’ll give a specific tip or decorating method that you can try in your home.
1. Hutch Styling Tips for Valentines Day Decor
When styling a hutch, for any season, it’s so important to create layers! This method of decorating helps to create depth and contrast between the shelves and decor pieces.
One of my tried and true methods for layering is to place a few platters or plates, in varying shapes and sizes, in the background of each shelf.
This hutch decorating hack helps to draw the eyes from front to back, or back to front, depending on who is looking at it. And, specifically for Valentine’s Day, I hung a wooden heart garland across the back of the hutch that I made years ago! It’s yet another layer for helping to achieve depth in the overall display.
Height variations, especially in a hutch, are, in my opinion, the most important styling element! Without varying the heights of items, the display will fall flat.
I like to accomplish this by stacking things. Stacking dishes, such as plates, bowls, small cups, or butter pats is an easy way to create a layered effect. Stack some items higher than others to achieve balance throughout the hutch.
Truth be told, I’m one of those people who have a hard time doing anything asymmetrical, especially when it comes to decorating my home. My brain just likes things to be balanced and symmetrical.
So, in my hutch, I think of symmetry like a butterfly. Whatever is happening on the left side, I like to mirror something similar on the right. Each shelf is anchored with a vase or pitcher or something tall like a bottle brush tree. The middle sections of each shelf have more low-lying decor items and get shorter the further towards the middle they are.
Think- small cups, creamers, short and squatty tureens, or gravy boats.
2. Valentine’s Day Color Palette
Don’t make colors an afterthought! The colors you choose, for any kind of vignette, are going to set the tone for how the whole display feels. Really spend some minutes thinking about the color(s) you want to combine to convey the story that your decor is going to tell.
If you want to stick to traditional reds and pinks for a valentine hutch display, then by all means, go for it!
However, if you would like to create a more subdued and elegant feel, might I suggest combining red and pink with creams, greens, and browns?? I know this is totally going rogue on the usual suspects of colors but hear me out.
The rustic vibe that the green and brown hues bring to a valentine display are SO GOOD! Paired with deep red and light pink, these colors truly create a dreamy, romantic aesthetic.
Truly, there are endless things you could do to bring in pink and red decor to a hutch or shelf vignette. There aren’t any rules when it comes to styling your home, so you do you!
The addition of pink and red into my hutch comes in a few forms.
The largest of them all are the cute fabric hearts. I adore all of the different patterns on them. For styling the various red, pink, and white hearts, I simply placed them in dishes, stood them up against decor items, or let them sit on their own.
For a soft, more romantic look, I randomly tied pink velvet ribbon bows around things such as the tops of lids, around vases, and on handles.
Finally, to bring in that rustic valentines look that many people love, I placed small, pink wooden hearts here and there.
3. Incorporating Vintage Valentine Elements
Hi, I’m Rachel and I have a slight obsession with vintage dishes:) Boy oh boy do I adore a good thrifted, vintage dish! I love to pack my hutch full of vintage dish ware, no matter the season.
For Valentine’s Day, I kept all of the dishes that I had originally put in there for winter and simply adapted them to feel more ‘valetine-esque’. This includes all ironstone plates, platters, and bowls, my brown floral dish ware, any milk glass, and pitchers or creamers.
Just like I wasn’t sure about using my brown transferware for Christmas, I wasn’t sure about using it for Valentine’s Day, either. But, you guys! I TOTALLY dig it. The brown really tamps down the bright reds and pinks, creating an overall elegant and romantic display!
Though the base layers and larger decor items are important in styling a cohesive display, the accessories are always my favorite part. These smaller decor pieces fill in all the cracks and empty spaces. This step is where you really see the whole vignette come to life!
To me, vintage accessories include any small scale items such as little cups or creamers, flower frogs, decorative objects, vintage linens such as handkerchiefs, or small-scale art.
And, when styling these items into a hutch display or shelf vignette, there is no right or wrong way to do it! Wherever you feel needs a little more ‘somethin’ somethin’ or if a specific area feels too empty, those are great spots to incorporate vintage accessories.
This step is where you can add a very personal touch to a vintage valentine display. If you have any special mementos from a family member or loved one, such as old Valentine’s Day cards, jewelry, or cherished family items, a valentine hutch is an amazing place to style those into!
For a sentimental touch in my valentine hutch, I tucked a vintage valentine postcard into a flower frog. Though this isn’t a family memento directly related to me, this used to be in someone’s family!
At some point, someone wrote this valentine note to a person that they loved. If it was special to them, it’s special to me.
4. Lighting and Finishing Touches in a Vintage Valentine Decor Display
Cozy lighting can be so comforting, especially during the winter months. However, it can be difficult to run a power cord through a piece of furniture like a hutch and you also don’t want to use real candles, for the obvious safety hazard.
So, instead, I decided to add romantic lighting in the form of battery tea lights! You guys. I’ve never actually used these small battery tea lights before but I love them! They add the most magical glow to each shelf, especially at night.
I experimented with how best to use them but I figured you really can’t go wrong with tea light candles. So, for the most effective glow, I placed two tea lights on each shelf, setting them behind decor items. You can’t really see the candles from the front but they backlight the display in the prettiest way!
Faux greenery and florals are your best friend when it comes to adding texture to any hutch display. Without greenery, there isn’t any movement or grounding elements.
In any type of seasonal vignette, natural elements such as greenery, flowers, pinecones, etc… helps to ground the display and creates a sense of harmony.
To bring harmonious cohesion throughout my valentine hutch, I used the greenery that was already in it for winter. This includes faux eucalyptus stems, icy pine branches, and small green bottle brush trees. To make it feel a tad more Valentine’s Day specific, I rummaged through my floral bin and found a few cream colored floral stems.
I placed the greenery inside a few ironstone vases and creamers and then filled in any gaps with the bottle brush trees.
Again, there isn’t a right or wrong way to decorate with faux stems nor are there right or wrong types of stems to use.
However, these are a few good options:
