Choosing Your Basket: The Foundation of Your Vignette
Basket Styles
When thinking about Easter basket vignettes specifically, I have found a few options that work best.
For a rustic and vintage feel, woven baskets such as rattan or wicker are lovely options. If you want a more modern look, try wire or galvanized metal baskets.
Size and Shape Considerations
The size and shape of a basket will influence the type of vignette you create and where it can be displayed.
Ask yourself questions like:
- Is the basket going to be in an open area with lots of space around it or tucked in next to other things?
- Is it going to be sitting on a shelf or table?
- Will the basket face one direction or will it be seen from multiple viewpoints?
Finding the Right Basket
So, where to go about sourcing a basket? Glad you asked!

Tips for Success: How to Bring a Basket Vignette to Life
1. Start with a Base.
You may have seen this basket before in previous blog posts…I found it thrifting years ago for just $3.00! The shape of the basket, with the large handle, is just stunning. I still love it and am eager to pull it out each Spring season!
The first thing I do is start with a base. Obviously this includes the basket itself because this is what all of your decor elements will sit in and on.
However, to prevent decor from slipping through the holes, and to give the vignette a bit more height, I like to first place a book or two on the bottom of the basket. Since we’re styling this one specifically for Easter and Spring, I also decided to add a small vintage book in the back as well for some more interest.
Then, for another nod to Spring, I placed a seed bag on top of the large grey book. I adore the graphics on it and the green color ties in perfectly with the decor elements coming next.
The fabric bag also brings in a bit of soft texture.
2. Layering and Texture.
When building a basket vignette, it’s important to layer items and incorporate different textures for visual interest.
To accomplish this, I first placed a small stack of ironstone plates on the left side of the basket and then set my favorite green enamel teapot on top!
To continue the green theme, I placed a green flower frog tipped on its side in the background. Flower frogs are small but mighty vintage objects because they are so versatile!
Then, on the right side of the basket, I added in my DIY Easter egg topiary for height! The pastel eggs and the vivid green moss are so dreamy. These elements bring Spring color to the display while still being cohesive with the other decor.
3. Balance and Proportion for Basket Decor
So, since the topiary is tall, I needed there to be something shorter in the foreground. To achieve balance in this space, I set a small white bunny in front of the topiary. To bring in more of the pink color, I then tied a small pink ribbon around the neck!
Finally, to fill in the empty gap between the plates and the bunny, a stack of three vintage butter pats was the perfect decor solution! Butter pats are another vintage decor piece that I turn to again and again for filling in, or finishing off, a vignette.
The dainty pink flowers on the top butter pat tie in with the pink eggs on the topiary, encouraging flow and cohesive movement in this basket decor.
Crafting Charming Spring Vignettes: Other Elements to Include
Of course there are numerous other decorative elements that can be included in basket decor vignettes. I simply used what I had on hand at the time because I didn’t want to buy anything new.
Other basket decor can include:
- Easter Eggs: Painted, decorative, and natural all do the trick!
- Fresh and Faux Florals: Spring flowers and greenery, either real or artificial, add color and life.
- Small Decorative Objects: Other small Spring-themed or decorative objects can complement the basket and overall theme such as vintage birds, antique postcards, or vintage floral teacups.
- Natural Elements: Elements found in nature such as moss, nests, or twigs add a lovely organic feel.
Placement and Styling: Where to Showcase Your Spring Basket Decor
With a finished basket display, it’s time to find a place to put it!
I chose to place my styled basket on the credenza, which sits underneath a row of windows in the living room. I really enjoy looking at vignettes throughout my day so I wanted to be able to view it often. This is a prominent location and is a good sized surface area for the shape of my basket.
Other areas of a home to display a basket vignette can include:
- Tabletop Displays: Style baskets on coffee tables, side tables, and dining tables for easy Spring decor!
- Mantel Decor: Use Easter basket vignettes as a unique and charming alternative to traditional mantel decor.
- Shelf Styling: Baskets can be incorporated onto shelf arrangements for a touch of Spring.
- Entryway Accents: Use a small basket vignette on an entry table to welcome guests.
