So, to help you create an inviting space that will have you snuggling up all season long, grab your favorite blanket and let’s dive in to the world of timeless winter living room decor with vintage milk glass!
Why Decorate with Vintage Milk Glass for Winter?
Truth be told, milk glass is in my top three favorite vintage decor items. Years ago, milk glass is actually what started my love of collecting vintage, so I have a huge respect and appreciation for this old glass.
But today, we’re chatting about displaying milk glass specifically for winter! So, why decorate with milk glass for winter?
Well, there are a plethora of reasons and benefits.
Here are a few:
- Milk glass is unique. There isn’t another type of glass, at least that I’ve found, that is so nostalgic and timeless. Full of character, milk glass brings endless texture to vignettes or displays. With a variety of patterns to choose from, there is truly something for everyone!
- It’s seasonally appropriate! The opaque, white milk glass not only jives with snowy winter weather, but it also creates a bright feeling, which can be appealing during the dark, winter months.
- Vintage milk glass is extremely budget-friendly. Milk glass can be easily found at thrift stores for just a dollar or two! Or, if you are looking for a more unique or rare piece, you can find those at antique malls but still for under $20!

Timeless Living Room Winter Decor with Vintage Milk Glass
For winter decorating, there are a handful of milk glass styling elements that I turn to year after year. Below are six of my tried and true methods for winter styling with milk glass.
Use Milk Glass as Vases for Winter Greens
On the credenza in my living room, I created a wintry, forest scene using a handful of flocked trees. For a unique accent, and to help tie in this area with the rest of the space, I set two of the trees inside low and wide milk glass vases.
This decorating method allows for height variation amongst the display as a whole. And, the trees just look pretty potted in these planters. It makes me happy and my decorating motto is to always do what makes you happy 🙂
Here on the wall shelf, a hobnail vase is styled with a few stems of faux cedar. The vase can be accented with accessories such as pinecones, lace ribbon, or a winter garland.
Then, on the far end of the shelf, a taller milk glass pedestal vase makes a big impact with three stems of faux eucalyptus.
Milk Glass Candle Holders for a Cozy Glow
There are two ways that I accomplish this.
The first way is by using actual milk glass taper candle holders and displaying them amongst winter textures as well as various other pieces of vintage decor.
On the mantel, I styled a pair of milk glass candle holders. I actually used them in the exact same way for Christmas and then tweaked them to look, and feel, more winter. To do so, I simply kept the green candles but replaced bells and ornaments with snowy pinecones!
The second way of styling milk glass with candles for winter is to use a small pedestal bowl or dish as a candle vessel.
Here on the hearth, I turned my smaller milk glass compote dish into a candle holder for a faux birch pillar candle! The candle itself (which I thrifted for a dollar) just fits, which enabled me to create height amongst this small vignette.
Display a Collection of Milk Glass
If you, like me, have a large collection of vintage milk glass, displaying many of those pieces together on one shelf is exceptionally stunning.
For winter, I combined many of my favorite milk glass pieces and styled them on the wall shelf in my living room. Hobnail is my favorite milk glass pattern so, as such, this shelf contains a plethora of lovely textures.
How to Style Milk Glass Decor: Creating a Vintage Winter Aesthetic
In the final section of this post, I’m sharing three specific styling ideas that pertain to winter decorating with milk glass. Each of these methods contains vintage decor and natural elements that will enable your vignettes to really shine!
Mixing Milk Glass with Other Winter Decor
You guys…mixing and matching vintage decor is SO much fun! If you’ve never tried it, I highly recommend. To create a cohesive and curated look, it’s important to use a multitude of styles, textures, and finishes.
Some food for thought: Is there snow where you live? Is it cold? Is it more brown with muted tones outside? What colors or patterns come to mind when you think about winter?
Mixed and matched decor can include:
- vintage clear glass jars (waffle patterned glass is especially pleasing)
- ironstone plates, platters, vases, and creamers
- restaurantware creamers
- vintage baskets
- winter scene plates or dishes
Milk Glass for a Minimalist Winter Look
Milk glass simply adds a hint of ‘something’ here and there.
So, if you are into the minimal aesthetic or just want super simple, straightforward decor for the winter season, milk glass is the answer!
Incorporate Vintage Books Into Milk Glass Displays
The final decorating idea is to incorporate vintage books into milk glass displays for winter! If you take anything from this article, let it be this.
On the far right end of my wall shelf, I basically created a ‘vignette within a vignette’. With the use of a large vintage book, I was able to raise up these select few items just a tad, which allowed for a small, storied display amongst the larger whole.
For me, I like to use books in varying tones of blue, dark green, white, or cream. These hues not only pair beautifully with milk glass but are also the colors that I use throughout my home during winter. So, in choosing books within the same color way, each space of my home feels connected.
Truly, vintage books bring in such character to styled displays, milk glass or otherwise. And, vintage books can be thrifted for just a few dollars a piece, making it an affordable decorating option!
