Dress up your home all pretty in pink with these Valentine’s day decor ideas using vintage milk glass!

Is your house feeling ‘blah’ during these long, cold winter days? I know mine can kinda feel a little ‘in-between’ this time of year. It’s still February, in the heart of winter, yet I’m longing for spring. So, for Valentine’s Day, I thought it would be nice to introduce a romantic, soft, and vintage look for the living room. All pretty in pink, this display, using my beloved milk glass, hints toward spring and I think it will get me through. Join me for some simple Valentine’s day decor ideas using vintage milk glass!

A Soft, Feminine Transition to Valentine’s Day

Valentine’s day is just around the corner! Though not an actual holiday (let’s be real…Hallmark just wanted to earn a little extra cash this time of the year), I always like to create a special display for this ‘holiday of love’. Because, truly, love is something to be celebrated…always.

However, still coming off of the expensive holiday season, I didn’t want to purchase anything new. So, instead of rushing to Target to buy the latest decor, I decided to use what else but my trusty milk glass collection! Paired with soft pink ribbon, fabric hearts, and other vintage ephemera, this display cost me $0 yet gives my living space just that little something extra.

Decorating for Valentine’s day in your home doesn’t require a trip to the store. You can totally create a curated, beautiful look by shopping your own collections and searching your house for things you already have! Join me below for all the pretty details.

Why Milk Glass is the Ultimate Valentine Vignette Base

So, why milk glass? Well, why not?! I don’t know what there’s not to love about milk glass. As you probably know, I utilize my milk glass collection all year round, tweaking it seasonally. It’s my most favorite vintage decor and the largest collection in my home. It’s endlessly fun to decorate with!

For Valentine’s day specifically, the creamy white color pairs beautifully with pink and red. And, since milk glass is a neutral decor item, you have the ability to use it in any room in your home!

Here are a few other great reasons to decorate with vintage milk glass for Valentine’s Day:

  • Vintage Aesthetic: The crisp white vintage milk glass vases and dishes makes pink and red tones ‘pop’.
  • Versatile: Milk glass is the most versatile decor item that I know of, making it a year-round essential.
  • Sustainable Decor: Using thrifted milk glass is an eco-friendly way to refresh your space.

The ‘Ingredients’ for a Vintage Valentine Shelf

Let’s chat about the items that I used to build my Valentine vignette. You guys…I didn’t buy a thing for this shelf decor. Everything you see I already had on hand, somewhere in my house.

You can do this without spending a dime…I promise! Just walk around your home, pulling anything and everything you think you might be able to use.

Here are the items I used to style my Valentine shelf:

  • milk glass vases, bowls, cups, and pedestals of varying heights
  • delicate vintage handkerchiefs and fabric hearts
  • antique Valentine postcards
  • pink velvet ribbon
  • pink taper/faux pillar candles
  • DIY wooden heart garland/ scattered pink wooden hearts
  • vintage flower frogs

Okay! Now, with all that, let’s get into how I actually created my Valentine display. Here, I’ll walk you step-by-step through my process and show you how to create the same look in your own home.

Step 1: Anchor with Milk Glass.

First, place your largest milk glass vases and jars, of varying heights, to establish the theme and create balance.

Then, fill in the rest of the shelf.

This step is basically trial and error. How I do it is set a few milk glass pieces in place, then step back and observe. Usually I don’t get the look ‘right’ the first few times, so I simply move things around until I am happy with the arrangement.

Step 2: Add Ephemera.

Next, I added the most whimsical antique ephemera in the form of antique Valentine postcards! (I purchase most of my postcards from this seller on e-Bay if you looking to buy some for yourself.)

Not only do these beautiful postcards add color to the back of the shelf but helps my vignette to tell a story, as well. Once upon a time, someone sent them to a person that they loved and the thing is still here today. Isn’t that somethin’?! Old postcards truly stand the test of time!

To display and hold up the postcards, I tucked each one into the pins of vintage flower frogs…my favorite tool for displaying paper ephemera!

Styling Tip: I wanted to raise up my frogs so that they could be seen better from the floor. However, I didn’t have any extra risers to use so I just left them as is. But, just FYI, it might behoove you to use a riser or pedestal to make your frogs sit higher up for added dimension.

Step 3: Soften the Look with ‘Pretty in Pink’ Details.

Here’s where the romantic pink vibes really come into play.

For some plush fabrics and soft, feminine textures, I first draped a few vintage handkerchiefs, one on each side of the shelf, into milk glass vases to bring in cozy texture. The embroidered pink roses are the most perfect aesthetic, aren’t they?!

Next, to really help the Valentine theme come alive, I scattered fabric hearts amongst the shelf. I piled a bunch of them into my banana stand, placed three here, one there, a few in bowls…you know…no rhyme or reason other than what looked pleasing to me at the time!

Then, to complete the ‘pretty in pink’ aesthetic, I used my favorite decorating hack…ribbon! Ribbon goes such a long way when decorating for the seasons.

For the Valentine theme, I tied pink velvet bows around the necks of milk glass vases, the knobs of lids, and the handles of creamers. This is such an easy way to elevate the look of decor for very little money!

Step 4: Let it Glow.

Every shelf display has to have romantic candlelight, right?! With their warm ambiance, candles just up the ‘oomph’ and cozy factor for the evening.

To tie the pink theme together, I first placed two pink taper candles inside my Fenton candle holders. I utilized symmetry for this part of the display, spacing these candles evenly apart, one on either side of the shelf ‘fold’. (think of a butterfly…what you do on one side, you mimic on the other side)

Obviously I’m not going to light the pink ones because they tip too easily, so for some actual warm glow, I used two faux pillar candles, again one on each side of the shelf.

The amber hue of the flickering candles provides comfort and hope at the end of a long day!

Step 5: The Finishing Touch.

It’s important, for any shelf, that the display as a whole feels united and cohesive.

So, to help with that, I draped my DIY wooden heart garland across the front base of the shelf. To me, this enables the left side of the shelf to feel connected with the right side.

I also scattered extra pink wooden hearts amongst the milk glass, giving them the look like they just fell from heaven and landed there 🙂

A Few More Valentine Shelf Decor Ideas

I wanted to briefly touch on the notion of using artwork when it comes to decorating a shelf. For ease, you can either hang art on the wall above the shelf or place art directly on it. You can’t go wrong either way!

As you’ll notice, I kept my winter barn art trio hanging as it was. For one, it’s still winter, so they still fit the season and two, the red barns tie perfectly in the with Valentine holiday. No need to change what’s already working!

Other art or wall decor that can work for Valentine’s Day includes:

Another neat and practical idea is to tie the shelf into what’s happening in the rest of the space.

This shelf sits in my living room above the TV. But, below the shelf, next to the TV, sits my most favorite thrifted milk glass lamp. To help this space feel connected with the shelf, I tied a pink velvet ribbon to the lamp and scattered more of the pink wooden hearts around it’s base.

I just think the small gesture makes this small space feel more intentional and mindfully decorated.

Budget-Friendly Decorating Tips for Valentine’s Day

Finally, let’s close out this post by briefly discussing how to decorate your home on a budget for the seasons. Because, well, you can! I truly get a kick out of this and have made it into a game. Like, instead of buying the latest and greatest decor, I like to frame it has ‘how much money can I not spend??’

Here are some simple ideas:

Shop Your Home: Look through closets, craft bins, and paper collections to see if there is anything you can use, or create, for your shelf.
The Power of Thrifting: Don’t buy new!! All of these pieces were found and curated over time, from thrift stores and vintage shops, for just a few dollars each.
Low-Cost Details: As you’ve seen, a simple roll of velvet ribbon can transform an entire collection. There’s truly no reason to over-spend, for any season, or for any item.
