Vintage Decor: Why Amber Glass Bottles are Perfect for Autumn
I’ve been using vintage bottles in my fall decorating for many years. My collection started as one lone medicine bottle and has grown each year since then!
Below are a few reasons as to why I think vintage amber bottles are the perfect item to use for fall decorating:
- Warm and Snug Tones: The deep amber color naturally complements a fall color palette (browns, oranges, golds, maroons) and creates a sense of warmth.
- Texture & Light: Amber glass catches and refracts light, adding a beautiful, subtle glow to any space.
- Versatility: These old bottles can fit into a wide range of decor styles from modern to bohemian to traditional vintage.
- Affordability & Accessibility: Vintage bottles are widely available and typically very inexpensive at thrift stores, antique shops, and flea markets.

Here is a snippet of where to go about curating amber bottles:
- Thrift Stores: The number one spot! When thrifting, check in the glassware, kitchen, and even the craft sections. You never know where a bottle might be hiding.
- Antique Malls: Great places to find a wider variety and, potentially, unique bottle shapes.

- Estate Sales/ Flea Markets: Often the best place for a bargain, especially for large collections.
Vintage Glass Bottles for Fall Decor: Pro Styling Tips to Achieve a Cohesive Look
1. Vary Heights & Shapes
The key to a visually interesting fall display is to mix tall and short as well as thin and wide bottles.
2. Clean & Prepare
To clean used bottles, I simply use a warm, damp rag and wipe them down. As for as any labels go, I tend to LOVE the old bottle labels so I always keep them on. However, if you want to remove labels, submerge the bottle in warm soapy water for 15-20 minutes. The label should just peel right off.
3. Mix with Textures
Amber glass pairs beautifully with other fall textures such as wood, linen, plaid, brass, copper, and knit. Play around with each texture, mixing them with your bottles. You’ll never know what speaks to you unless you just start somewhere!
4. Don’t Overdo It
Less is more! A few well-placed bottles can be more impactful than a cluttered collection.
Amber and Brown Hues: Decorating with Vintage Glass Bottles for Fall- 5 Creative Ideas
With that, let’s jump into five unique ways of decorating with vintage bottles.
1. Vase Displays
I think, for many of us, using vintage jars as a vase is the number one go-to option. It’s just so quick and easy and makes such a bold statement!
To achieve the look, try using either a single bottle or group a handful of bottles together. Fill with simple fall stems such as wheat, dried florals, or spilling eucalyptus branches. Display on shelving, on a mantle, on a kitchen island, or an entryway table.
2. Mantel or Shelf Vignette
Vintage amber bottles look so breathtaking when styled on a shelf or mantel. I think these two spaces of a home are where the warmth and timeless nature of these old relics truly shine!
To achieve the look, group bottles of varying shapes and sizes together on a mantle or shelf or both. To create a cohesive vignette, layer the bottles with vintage books, miniature white pumpkins, candles, or other simple fall accessories.
3. Table Centerpiece Decor
Amber bottles and jars create such a striking table centerpiece for any fall occasion!
To achieve the look, use a wood riser, table runner, or plaid scarf as a base. Then, arrange a collection of bottles down the center of a dining table. Add a few small gourds or pumpkins between the bottles.
For an added textural element, you have the option to add a few wheat or fall stems inside some of the bottles.
4. Mix and Match with Other Vintage Decor
For a curated and character-rich fall aesthetic, try mixing and matching the amber bottles with other vintage decor pieces. These mix and match vignettes can be styled anywhere from a mantel to a shelf to a hutch to a kitchen display.
Other vintage decor that pairs SO beautifully with amber bottles includes:
- milk glass
- ironstone
- copper
- brown transferware
- vintage books
- wood crates or cheeseboxes
- vintage art
5. Bookends
Last, but certainly not least, is to utilize a lone amber glass jar as a bookend(s)!
To achieve the look, back a tall or large glass jar up against a row of books. You can either use two jars, like one on each end of the books. Or, use one jar and a different item of substantial size such as a vintage crate or lidded jar.

FAQ’s for Vintage Glass Bottles
While researching ideas for this post, I kept coming across the same handful of questions in regard to vintage glass bottles. Hopefully, if you have some of the same queries, these will be of help.
1. How to clean vintage glass bottles?
Gently rinse them with room temp water to remove any loose debris. Then, wash them with mild dish soap and warm water. Gently dry with a cotton towel. For cloudy glass or mineral deposits, soak the bottle in a solution of equal parts white vinegar and water or try a baking soda paste.
2. How to identify vintage glass bottles?
Vintage bottles may have a different weight, clarity, bubbles, or a rough lip, which can be seen if you compare it to a new bottle. Look for any information on the bottom of the bottle such as mold numbers, etched dates, or makers markings. Any or all of these elements may be able to help you identify the age of the bottle and its manufacturer by doing an online search.
3. How do I know if my bottles are valuable?
Check the rarity of it by looking at the maker’s mark, color, and condition. Other elements such as pontil scars or the mold seams may also help you to age or value the bottle. Also, colors such as amethyst or teal are rare, making them more valuable than other colors.
4. How to tell how old a glass bottle is?
Check the height and thickness of the mold seam on the bottle. Lower, thicker seams point to an early model or hand blown construction. And, you can check for a pontil mark, which is a rough spot on the bottom where an iron rod was attached to the hand-blown bottle. If there is a pontil mark, this suggests that the bottle was made prior to 1860.
