Autumn on Display: Creative Tips for Fall Shelf Styling (On a Budget)
Shelving is one of those spaces that can get neglected and pushed to the way side, sometimes thinking, “I’ll do that tomorrow”, “I don’t have time to decorate my shelves!”, or “Styling shelving is too hard!”
Some of my favorite fall decor to use on shelving and that can be found easily at thrift stores include:
- vintage milk glass
- amber bottles or jars
- dried leaves or eucalyptus stems
- vintage books
- small wood boxes or trivets
- pottery vases
- crocks
- stoneware jugs
- ironstone platters and tureens
And, I also want to tell you that seasonal decorating does not need to cost you an arm and a leg! If you are looking for seasonal shelf decor ideas that won’t leave your wallet completely empty, here are some tips.
- shop at thrift stores for seasonal decor
- use what you already have around the house and tweak it to fit the season
- forage for free, natural elements such as twigs, tall branches, leaves, grasses, acorns, or pinecones
- utilize vintage decor which can be found at estate sales, garage sales, and vintage shops
- seasonal colored ribbon is your best friend and can make any display look totally chic
A Guide to Fall Shelf Styling with Vintage and Thrifted Decor
All of the decorating ideas I’m sharing here can be used on any type of shelving, whether it be open shelving, kitchen shelves, built-ins, or even shelves inside a hutch!
There is truly something here for everyone so let’s get into it.
From Bare to Beautiful: Fall Shelf Styling with Thrifted and Vintage Items
It’s true that I adore vintage decor. However, you can totally use more modern pieces when styling shelving. Or, if you want to marry the two styles together, there is something beautiful to be said about combining vintage and modern decor within the same space.
1. Thrifted Treasures and Where to Find Them.
Before we dive in, let’s quickly chat about where to find one-of-a-kind pieces for fall decorating. There are many places to source fall decor but my favorites for finding budget-friendly decor include:
- vintage shops
- dollar store
- thrift stores
- Michaels
- Target
I tend to be one who either thrifts for seasonal decor or use what I already have, just in a different way.
Other places include:
- Etsy
- e-Bay
- estate sales
- flea markets
2. Setting the Stage: Choosing Fall Colors and Textures.
Before beginning any shelf vignette for fall, start by deciding on which colors and textures you want to incorporate. This method lays the foundation for your decor and is helpful for creating an overall cohesive and balanced display.
Favorite fall colors can include:
- copper or rust
- maroon
- goldenrod or deep, mustard yellow
- amber
- deep hues of brown
For me, some of my favorite textures to evoke feelings of fall include:
- velvet
- fall stems such as wheat, dried leaves, or eucalyptus
- brown transferware
- natural elements like seed pods, pinecones, or acorns
- pampas grass
Finally, when thinking about textures, you don’t have to just rely on the ordinary things you think of to bring in texture, such as baskets or florals, though those do work beautifully.
The one other element that I rely on is pattern. Patterns bring in lovely texture and can bring a whole new feel to a fall display.
Cozy fall patterns include:
- plaid
- houndstooth
- checked
- paisley
- knit
3. Curating a Collection of Fall-Themed Items.
When styling shelving for fall, an easy way to make a big impact is to utilize a collection of something. You could either use it all on one shelf or spread it out amongst many shelves.
In my home for fall, I used many of my beloved collections on shelves including milk glass, ironstone, and brown transferware. Each collected piece was found for a purpose and tells its own story. Yet, when combined altogether on a shelf, the individual pieces act as one united family, creating a harmonious and one-of-a-kind autumn display.

4. The Art of Arranging: Layering and Grouping for Visual Interest.
The best piece of advice I can give when it comes to styling shelves for any season is to layer, layer, layer! In my opinion, you can never have too many layers. Layers on a shelf add depth and contrast, leading to a pleasing display.
If you are wondering, “ummm Rachel? What do you mean by layers?” Glad you asked! Let’s chat briefly about why layers on a shelf are just as important as layers of clothing on a hike or layers of frosting on a cake. You wouldn’t want to be without either of those, would you?!
There are three layers to any shelf…the back, middle, and front. Simply put, you want to place tall, beef-y items at the back, medium-sized decor, as well as florals in the middle, and small, decorative accents in front.
Below is a graphic to help us.
Anatomy of a Shelf Display
- Back of Shelf- includes tall elements such as large crocks, vases, pitchers, baskets, or wooden boxes. Also included here are large and dramatic florals or stems for added height and texture and anything related to the shelf that hangs on the wall such as art or architectural items.
- Middle of Shelf- includes medium-sized items such as creamers, plates, platters, books, etc…
- Front of Shelf- includes small accessories that don’t cover up any of the other decor and textural elements. Also included here are any base layers such as scarves, table runners, hankies, etc…
If you are thinking, “but I don’t have enough decor to use for each layer!”, I know. I get it. This all used to be very overwhelming for me, too.
Go thrifting once a week and see what you can find. Keep a running list on your phone of shelf decor or accents that you want to purchase for your home. Then, when you happen to drive by a thrift store, you can confidently walk in, knowing exactly what it is you need. And, before you know it, you will have a whole lot of items, ready to be used on a shelf!
5. Beyond the Shelving: Fall Elements for Surrounding Spaces.
My last decorating tip is to think about your room as a whole. If you stand back and look at your shelf from afar, what other pieces of furniture or wall space are within that point of view?
For example, my wall shelf sits just above the couch in the living room. To tie the shelf in with the couch, I put rust colored throw pillow covers on the pillows. Or, if you have a large amount of wall space any where around your shelf, consider thrifting a large piece of art, in a similar color way or theme as your shelf, to hang there.

Want to know another secret?
All of the tips and decorating elements shared above can be used in any space in your home. Fall shelf decor is easily adaptable to bedrooms, bathrooms, entry ways, and even the kitchen! Just remember to mix and match textures, play with colors, and incorporate elements of nature to truly capture the essence of the season.
Simply use the provided styling elements and tweak them as you see fit. If you live in a small space with little decorating surface, just size down the amount of decor used and pack it full of texture. Voila!
Closing Tidbits on Styling Shelving for Fall
During this cozy season, a beautifully styled fall shelf with thrifted and vintage decor is not only budget-friendly but also a creative and thrifty way to add warmth to your home.
I promise you can do this…have a little patience and give yourself grace as you teach yourself a new skill.
As we continue through autumn, which is a season of change, be encouraged to slow down, take a deep breath, and choose to do things differently.

Great article Rachel! Pretty styling and thrifted pieces are the best! XO- MaryJo
Thanks, friend!
Rachel,
I find styling my bookcase and mantel in our family room one of the most fun about changing seasonal decor. I take my time and after placing items sit back and study them . Usually this way I get a better perspective. Usually I end up removing items rather than adding them. Thrifting has been a hobby of mine for years so I have lots of items to choose from.but for fall I like to use a many natural items as possible. Love this cooler weather here in N.C. It was a long hot summer.
Hi, Kathy!
Thanks so much for the lovely comment!
