DIY Mini Tart Pan Coasters with Cane

These DIY mini tart pan coasters with cane are an adorable Summer accessory!

I bet you didn’t know you could use tart pans and spray glue to create one-of-a-kind coasters, did you?! This fun summer craft will have you wishing for a cold beverage and a sun lounger in no time! Join me as I show you how to make DIY mini tart pan coasters with cane to use for any Summer festivity!

Easy DIY Summer Decor

You guys. This DIY took on a mind of it’s own as it went along. Many of the things that I finagled to complete this project I hadn’t planned on doing but, as I went from step to step, each one made sense.

I have these coasters sitting outside on our patio couch and we have been using them everyday! They are totally adorable and useful for when your glass starts producing condensation on warm, Summer days. If I can make these, anyone can. Let’s get into it!

Supplies and Materials for DIY Mini Tart Pan Coasters

Here are all the materials that I used for this project.

• 1 pack of mini tart pans
• 1 package of cane
• scissors
• hot glue gun and glue sticks
• spray glue
• fabric scraps
• Sharpie marker
• work surface cover such as an old towel, sheet, or paper towels
• heavy items such as unopened pop or soup cans

*A few days before you start this project, flatten our your cane using a heavy book or something similar. You want your cane to be flat when cutting it out.*

*Right away, I want to let you know that the spray glue takes a long time to dry. Allow at least 6 hours, even overnight, for the glue to adhere fully to the metal. From start to finish, this project took me 2 days.*

Step 1: Make Cane Circles.

The first thing I did was trace my cane pieces for the inside of the coasters.

I flipped the cane over so that the backside was facing up. This helps the marker to not be seen after it’s cut out.

Then, I traced around the inside circle from the tart pan using a marker.

I only wanted to make 4 coasters, so that’s how many circles I traced.

Step 2: Cut Out the Circles.

Next, I cut out each circle using a scissors.

Try a test fit. The circle should fit snuggly into the bottom of the tart pan.

If it doesn’t, trim a little off the sides.

Step 3: Glue the Tart Pan Base.

This step is the most tedious. Practice patience with this part, okay? 🙂

First, cover your work surface. I did this outside on my patio and laid an old towel down to work on top of.

Then, remove the inner circles from the pans.

I had never used spray adhesive before so I didn’t quite know the amount of glue to use. The first thing I learned was that this stuff is super sticky!

Tip: I recommend using those rubber finger protectors so that you don’t get glue all over your fingers.

Initially, I did a super thin layer but that wasn’t holding. So, I ended up doing a thick layer of glue on each circle.

It looked like this.

Then, I flipped it up and over, into the base of the tart pan.

Press and hold VERY FIRMLY for at least two minutes to help the glue adhere.

Now, because the base of the pan has a hole in the underside, I couldn’t let them dry flat otherwise they would stick to the towel.

So, I ended up leaning them up against my large planter outside.

Tip: If the circle falls off from the base, add more glue. This happened to me twice. I sprayed more glue around the base and held it in place for another minute. That did the trick.

Once you have all of your pans glued together, let them dry COMPLETELY, at least 4-5 hours. I ended up letting them sit inside in the air conditioning overnight.

This is what they looked like the next day.

Step 4: Add Fabric to the Underside.

This is the step that I hadn’t initially planned on doing. However, the bottoms of the tart tins were still tacky from the glue. That just wasn’t going to fly! I didn’t want the coaster sticking to everything that it touched.

So, I thought for a minute about how I could cover up the glue and then a lightbulb went off! I could use the same fabric from my bunting DIY!

To do this, I first flipped the fabric so that the pale side was showing.

Then, I traced around the base of a tart tin with a marker to create a rough circle shape.

I traced 4 of these fabric circles and then cut them out.

Again, I did a test fit to see how well they fit around the base. If they are too wide, simply cut off a little fabric until it looks right.

I personally didn’t want the fabric to be seen from above so I went in a little from the edge of the tart tin.

*Plug in your hot glue gun here*

Then, I arranged the fabric circles and the tart tins on a paper towel for gluing.

I squeezed a narrow line all the way around each circle and secured to the base of the tart tin.

I let those dry then pulled off any stray glue strings.

After I had the fabric done, I realized that this was totally worth it because now the bottoms of the tart tins won’t scratch the surface that they sit on. It’s a win-win!

Step 5: Glue Cane to the Bottom.

Now we are to the last step on these DIY coasters! Remember those cane circles I cut out forever ago? Yea, it’s time for those.

Again, I did this step outside and used a towel as a work surface cover.

All I did was coat the back side of each can circle with spray glue.

Then, I flipped it into the bottom of the tart tin.

Apply A LOT of pressure here and hold for a good 60 seconds.

I learned that it takes awhile for the glue to bond with the metal so I ended up using full sparkling water cans as weights.

This really helped adhere the cane with the tart tin during the drying process.

Allow a good 6 hours for these to dry. I let them sit overnight with the cans on top.

Where To Use Cane Coasters

After all that, we have 4 adorable cane coasters!

You guys. I am obsessed with these! I’ll admit they were a ton of work to get right but the effort was so worth it.

These cane coasters can be used:

• for everyday use inside
• in an outdoor space
• as a handmade gift for a friend

These DIY mini tart pan coasters with cane would also be super fun to use at a 4th of July celebration or a Summer birthday gathering.

I have them stacked outside on the patio to use whenever we dine al fresco. These coasters are such a fun accessory to add to a casual Summer dinner!
