Tell your story in stitches! These 7 quick ways to layer vintage lace and doilies into your home brings a timeless feel to any space.

For a vintage-loving soul like myself, any time I get to talk about ideas for vintage decorating, I’m a happy girl. Funny enough, we’re doing just that! Vintage doilies and lace are simple, non-stuffy decor items that can be used in any home. From modern to cottage to mid-century styles, I’m setting the stage for high-impact decorating that takes less than five minutes! Vintage doilies and it’s lace counterpart are the ultimate soulful pieces that can be found easily, and on a budget. Join me as I share 7 quick ways to layer vintage lace and doilies into your home decor. It’s so much fun and way easier than you think!

The Short Answer

Vintage lace and doilies add warmth and texture to any room in less than five minutes — think draping them over baskets, tucking them under vignettes as a base, framing them as wall art, sliding one beneath a lamp, or using them as table runners and bowl liners. They pair beautifully with other thrifted pieces like milk glass, ironstone and old books and work across every season with just minor styling tweaks. The key is layering them with intention so each piece gets a moment to shine.

Simple and Soulful Ways To Style Vintage Lace and Doilies

Years ago, when I first started getting into thrifting, antique shopping and vintage decor, I purchased my very first vintage doily. It was a larger one, with the most beautiful and intricate floral detailing. That one find, for just a few dollars, jumpstarted my deep affection for vintage linens and I never looked back.

Vintage linens, no matter if it’s a doily, lace, a handkerchief, or a table linen, brings this sense of story to a home. Like, these things have been around for years and years, yet are still here, withstanding the test of time. Linens are the one item that I reach for, again and again, to add soft texture to any space.

Why vintage doilies and linens are the ultimate soulful decor items:

The Essence of Layer- These found textiles bridge the gap between history and a modern home.

Effortless Styling– You don’t need to do a major overhaul or an all-encompassing DIY to bring vintage decor to life-just a few thoughtful placements is really all it takes- and linens offer just that!

Collecting the Classics: My Favorite Types of Vintage Lace

Hunting for vintage linens is one of my all-time favorite things in life. If you ever can’t find me in an antique store, don’t panic! I’m probably on the floor, digging through a pile of old textiles.

Truly, there are hundreds of varieties of doilies and lace linens to choose from. To help take some of the guess work out of it, here are a few handy tips!

What to Look for While Thrifting

  • Crocheted Doilies: These have a heavier, more textural feel to them because they are quality. Handmade and oh so beautiful, these are perfect for adding softness literally anywhere!
  • Tatting & Needle Lace: Look for delicate, airy ‘web-like’ patterns that look stunning underneath a lamp.
  • Embroidered Linens: These pieces feature a mix of lace and floral stitching, which adds a bit of color to a neutral display. I ADORE using floral embroidered linens for spring!
  • Eyelet: This is my very favorite variety to hunt for. I can’t get enough of the dainty and romantic eyelet fabrics, some complete with ruffles. It’s the perfect complement to a vignette or side table!

Where to Find Affordable Vintage Lace

  • Thrift Stores: You guys…you need to dig!! Often, the best linens are bunched up at the bottom of a box for just a dollar or two!
  • Estate Sales: These sales are the best spots to find larger vintage lace tablecloths or runners, or sets that have been kept in cedar chests for decades, meaning they are usually in perfect condition.
  • Antique Malls: I’ve found some of my best lace handkerchiefs in antique mall booths, looking pristine, for just a few bucks.
Rachel’s Pro- Thrifter Tip: When you’re out hunting, don’t worry about minor yellowing or stains. A gentle soak in some warm water with a splash of OxiClean can work wonders. And, you know I actually prefer a bit of patina-it proves the piece has a history!

7 Quick Ways to Layer Vintage Lace and Doilies Into Your Home Decor

Okay! Now, with all that knowledge, let’s put it all into practice styling and decorating and all that…the fun stuff! Below are seven of my best ideas for decorating with vintage doilies and lace.

1. The Basket Peek-a-boo

Drape a doily or lace-edged linen out of a basket, or rest it on top of the thrifted find. I love this ‘perfectly imperfect’ look because it adds a romantic touch to an otherwise utilitarian storage item!

I tend to tweak this small vignette in my bedroom seasonally by switching the lace linen out for a floral one in spring or a tatted lace for winter. It’s budget-friendly and pretty…what more could you want?!

2. The Layered Base

One of my favorite ways to style linens is by placing a vintage doily underneath thrifted plates or bowls as a base layer. I love the look of a soft doily at the bottom of a vignette…it just feels complete to me.

It’s also so lovely when the lace ‘teeth’ peek out from under the ceramic edge, which adds instant sophistication to a stack!

3. The Storybook Marker

Another fun idea is to tuck a doily or piece of lace into a vintage book cover so it hangs out slightly, like an oversized bookmark! This creates a type of ‘slow living’ vignette on a shelf, mantel, or bedside table.

I really like this one because it literally looks as if someone is reading the book and seemingly had to mark their spot before putting it down.

Side Note: The doily seen here is another item that I inherited from my Grandma Dor, making this display extra special.

4. The Chair Drape: A 10-Second Refresh

I have an extra chair in my dining room. Sometimes it feels kinda bare and boring, so I’ll toss a vintage lace tablecloth over the edge, like a throw blanket!

The drape helps to break up hard lines and catches the afternoon spring light.

5. The Seasonal Tree Skirt

I’m all about re-imagining and re-using textiles in unique ways, especially for holidays! One of my favorite thrifty hacks is to utilize a lace tablecloth as a tree skirt for Christmas (or Easter).

For just a few dollars, the gathered fabric adds a soft, romantic foundation to any seasonal display!

6. The Lamp Base Anchor

A very simple idea is to slide a doily underneath a lamp base to protect furniture and add a layer of soul.

Here on top of the curio cabinet, a large thrifted doily does just that! And, the beautiful way the light reflects off the intricate weave at night is just lovely.

7. The Softened Nightstand

To create a peaceful bedside retreat, use a doily as a soft layer on a side table or nightstand. The doily below I thrifted for $2.00! Part eyelet, part lace, it’s the most luxurious combination of textures for a bedroom!

This one very simple item makes any piece of furniture feel more intentional and cozy.

Honoring the Hand-Crafted, Vintage Decor

The thing I love most about vintage decor, no matter what it is, is that each piece has a story to tell, and linens are no exception. I don’t know where each piece came from, or who made it, but I do know I’m so happy to have it and continue to tell it’s story!

So, here’s a tribute to the makers- helping us to remember the history behind every hand-stitched piece.

I’m a firm believer in using things you already have to decorate with. I’m sure many of us have stacks of linens and old doilies or lace remnants piled in a heap. Take this as your sign to use those pretty things. After all, your own linen closet is the best place to ‘shop’ today!

FAQ’s on Vintage Doilies

How do I identify authentic vintage doilies?

Look for signs of handmade craftsmanship such as the use of cotton or linen, slight irregularities in the stitching, and the presence of patina such as yellowing of the linen or minor wear that would be associated with an item of age. Other tell-tale signs include intricate, detailed techniques such as crochet, tatting, or hand-stitched embroidery.

Best ways to clean antique and lace doilies without damaging them?

You want to gently soak them in warm water with either: a mild detergent, OxiClean, or a mix of Dawn dish soap and hydrogen peroxide. Rinse them thoroughly and air dry flat. Avoid harsh chemicals such as bleach and PLEASE do not scrub, squeeze, or twist the water from them! If needed, you can iron them, placing a cloth between the linen and iron itself to avoid overheating.

How to identify genuine lace versus modern reproductions?

In general, genuine handmade lace will be characterized by human-made irregularities in the stitching. Look for features that hold the lace pattern together. This looks like tight little braids or delicate chains. You can also check the feel. Antique lace feels soft and light against the skin. Modern, machine-made reproductions contains perfect stitching and consistency across the entire linen and the fabrics are usually synthetic, making them feel stiff or scratchy.
