Why Small Entryways Need a Strategic Approach to Decorating

If you, like me, live in a small footprint home with a tiny entryway, it’s all about mindful strategy! Over the years, I’ve learned a handful of tricks to make a small entry space look bigger and more welcoming while still looking stylish.

Below are a few key elements:

  • Function Over Form (but with style): The overarching need is to prioritize function (a place for keys, shoes, mail, decor, etc…) while still embracing your personal style.
  • Every Inch Counts: In a small space, every single item and placement choice matters!
  • Avoid Clutter: It’s of utmost importance to keep the area tidy to prevent it from feeling cramped and overwhelming.

In my entry, I utilized space on a large wall to hang a metal storage rack. This is a space right inside the door that holds keys, sunglasses, shopping lists, mail, and other miscellaneous items.

If you have a small entry, these types of organizers are extremely helpful!

Pro Styling Tips for Your Fall Entryway

When it comes to decorating a small entryway, the key is mindful decorating. Whatever is used, styled, or put in that space must serve a specific purpose. There just isn’t enough room for any excess clutter or extra stuff!

Here are some helpful tips that I abide by in my own entryway space:

  • Think Vertical: Use the walls to your advantage with hooks, art, and mirrors.
  • Embrace the “Less Is More” Rule: In a small space, it’s easy to go overboard. Choose a few intentional pieces that mean something rather than cluttering the area with needless items.
  • Stick to a Cohesive Color Palette: To make the space feel intentional and not chaotic, stick to 2-3 colors for your fall decor to help tie everything together.
  • Use Multi-Functional Pieces: Utilize items that serve more than one purpose; like a mirror, that also makes the space feel bigger, or a storage bench that can be used for storage as well as a seat.

Now, with all those helpful tidbits, let’s style my entryway for fall!

I want to preface this section by saying that I didn’t buy anything ‘new’ for this space. By simply using materials and decor that I already had on hand( all of it found thrifted), I was able to decorate my small entry for fall, basically for free, and you can, too!

Let’s get into it.

1. Cozy Textiles

Fall textiles, in materials such as knit, plaid, or velvet, add an ultra-cozy feeling to an entryway.

Keep in mind that, when styling a small entry, use only items that you think are necessary. Remember, it’s all about function and practicality!

Textiles in an entry can include items such as:

  • a rug or runner (swap out a summer runner for one with more texture or in a warmer color)
  • throw blanket tossed over the back of a chair
  • chair or bench cushions
  • a throw pillow

I didn’t change any of the textiles in my entry for fall, simply because I only have one, which is a braided green rug that I just adore. It’s perfect for any season, soft yet durable, and the dark color hides dirt.

2. Layered Art & Mirrors

Vintage art and mirrors add beautiful visual interest to a small entryway.

Having a strategically placed mirror helps to bounce light around, making the space feel larger than it is. Art brings in character, allowing your entry to tell a story.

In my entry, this vintage wooden mirror always hangs here. I thrifted this years ago for just $5.00! It’s the prettiest, moody shade of brown wood and complements fall decor in such lovely way.

You know me and my deep affection for vintage art…I can’t decorate for any season without using at least one piece of art in each space!

As far as art goes in my small entry, I chose a small-scale fall barn scene from my collection. Tip: Because this is a high-traffic area, I used some 3M tape and adhered the frame to the wall so that it wouldn’t get bumped or fall off.

When choosing art to use for fall decorating, my advice is to try and pick art that complements the other decor or items in your entry. This way, everything will feel cohesive and flow effortlessly together.

3. Warm and Compact Lighting

In a small foyer or entryway, lighting is SO important!

The warm glow of mood lighting is a simple way to create an inviting atmosphere. Examples include adding a small lamp (battery or electric), faux candles, or a string of battery-operated lights to an entry table, shelf, or hung along the ceiling.

Obviously, I have an overhead light in my entryway that I do love. However, it’s pretty bright to have on all the time. So, for fall, I decided to place a flickering faux pillar candle in a basket on the step. The flickering is truly magical, especially at night.

4. Branches & Greenery

A few fall branches with colorful leaves, either faux or real, can make a big impact without taking up much space. Branches and stems also bring life and movement to a small space.

In my entry for fall, I placed a vintage vase on the shelf, that I found thrifted for just a few dollars. To add height and natural decor, I placed a single stem of copper colored leaves inside. Tip: When adding stems to a vase, be sure to bend the branches in a way that makes it look more realistic.

For just a hint more fall texture, I tied a brown velvet ribbon around the top of the vase.

5. Wall Shelf with Hooks

Another important element when it comes to small entryways is the use of wall hooks. Instead of using precious floor space, utilize the vertical space for coats, bags, and other accessories to keep the floor clear.

And, it’s even better if there is a shelf above the hooks that you can use for decor or extra storage!

6. Small Scale Fall Decor

To inject a fall theme and autumn hues into cramped entryway, small scale decor goes a long way. In a limited space, a few mindfully chosen decor items avoids overwhelming the area with ‘too much’.

Think:

On the shelf above the hooks in my entry, I kept it very simple and minimal.

Using a few small white pumpkins and acorns combined with a piece of vintage copper, the vase with stems, and a small vintage book, it’s the perfect amount of visual decor without feeling cluttered.

7. Moveable Basket Vignette

The last idea on the list today is to create a moveable basket vignette!

I do this all the time when decorating for the seasons because it’s easy, flexible, compact, and packs a big punch without taking up too much space. The best part about styling a basket vignette is that anything goes and you can use items you already have on hand.

For my fall entryway vignette, I decided to utilize my favorite thrifted basket.

On the right side, I placed a large green velvet pumpkin (again thrifted) to help tie this area in with the rug. Then, on the left side of the basket, I created a fall floral arrangement inside a large ironstone pitcher. A mix of faux oak leaves, maroon eucalyptus, and dried seed pods add texture and fall color to the vignette.

Finally, as stated above, I placed a faux candle near the front of the basket for cozy lighting. To tie this display in with the rest of the entryway decor, I tied the same velvet ribbon to the pitcher handle as is on the smaller shelf vase.

Voila! Instant fall display without spending a dime!

Closing Tidbits on Inviting Entryway Decor Tips: Fall Furnishings for Small Spaces

I truly hope you can see how, with a little creativity and these simple entryway decor ideas, even the smallest of spaces can be transformed into a welcoming autumn spot.

With a mindful switch in thinking, I urge you to see your small entryway as an opportunity, not a limitation. You can make a small area look just as beautiful, if not more beautiful, as larger ones. Please don’t compare your unique space to anyone else’s because it’s your story to tell and that is so special.

Be encouraged to see beyond, finding hope and renewal along the way.
