Thrifted and Cozy: Styling Vintage Baskets for Your Fall Home Decor
In this post, I’ll cover why baskets work so well for fall decor, types of baskets to look for at thrift stores, and five specific styling ideas that will work in any room.
Why Vintage Baskets Are Essential for Fall
Here are a few reasons as to why I love baskets for fall decor:
- Texture and Warmth: The woven material instantly contrasts with smooth surfaces (ironstone, glass, pottery) and adds a cozy, layered feel that is essential for fall decorating.
- Harvest Aesthetic: Baskets naturally evoke the experience of the harvest season, making them the ultimate fall accent.
- Function and Form: They are decorative while, at the same time, offering brilliant storage solutions, helping maintain a tidy and simple home.
- Sustainable, Budget Decor with Character: Vintage baskets are eco-friendly and budget-friendly and come with a storied history that mass-produced items lack.
Those are all things to get behind, right?!

Your Thrifting Guide: Types of Vintage Baskets to Look For
Yes, you can source vintage baskets, or any basket for that matter, at places other than thrift stores, but why?!
When I’m out thrifting, I always keep an eye out for interesting baskets with pretty wood tones or baskets with handles.
Here are a handful of other options:
Wicker or Woven Baskets
These types of baskets are great for storage and larger vignette-type displays. Look for tight, sturdy weaves with a dark or medium brown patina.
Woven Trays/Serving Baskets
Woven trays are a lovely decor option for coffee tables or ottomans. Look for flat, wide designs in a wood tone that complements your existing decor.
Old Market or Picnic Baskets
These larger-scale baskets are amazing to use as statement pieces. Think: on a mantel or hearth, in an entryway, or stacked up for a striking display. Look for unique shapes and interesting colors. If they happen to have the original handles or lid still intact, that’s even better!
Small Gathering Baskets
Small gathering baskets are great for hanging on a wall or for use in curated shelf vignettes. Look for baskets with a loop or handle, such as egg baskets.
Tobacco Baskets
This type is a favorite of mine to find out in the wild!
These baskets are ideal for wall decor or as a shelf background accent. Look for large, flat, or shallow baskets with either a square or rectangular shape. Tobacco baskets are characterized by thick wood slats.
A Few More Thrifting Tips for Vintage Baskets:
When thrifting or buying baskets secondhand, here are a few more elements that I always look out for:
- check for any weird or gross odors
- look for condition imperfections (splinters, chips, missing wood, etc…)
- think about how you can use it in multiple ways (if I know I’ll use a found basket in more than two ways, I’ll usually buy it)
5 Charming Fall Decorating Ideas with Vintage Baskets
Okay! Now, with all that knowledge, let’s chat about five of my favorite ways to use old baskets for fall decorating. The beauty about all of these ideas is that they can be custom-tailored to you to fit your home, needs, and style.
Let’s get into it!
1. Shelf Decor
Small-scale baskets make for the prettiest fall shelf decor! It is an unexpected element that really brings out the rustic nature of the season.
Here in the bedroom, I used a thrifted basket, in the most dreamy wood tone, on the bottom of my nightstand. Draping a vintage lace hanky out of the side breaks up the all-wood look while a plaid ribbon adds a pop of fall pattern.
Then, I topped it off with some vintage items. The vintage thread ties in with the living room and mantel. And, I just love milk glass so I use it wherever I can!
2. Shelf Vignette
Styling old baskets into vignettes is probably my most favorite way to use them. They add such rich texture and warmth to any vignette, whether it be on a wall shelf, mantel, open shelving, or a bookshelf!
Here on the wall shelf in my living room, I combined this vintage tobacco basket (which I found at an estate sale years ago) with vintage fall pieces from my collection including amber jars, milk glass, and vintage books.
The beauty about styling baskets into a vignette is that, really, anything goes. There aren’t any rules so you do you!
3. Background Accent
This idea kind of goes hand-in-hand with the vignette tips above.
However, if you aren’t into styling or completely overhauling a shelf for the season, you can literally just tuck a basket behind existing decor and it instantly leans fall!
You could also hang a basket, or group multiple baskets, on a wall to create a neutral yet pleasing background accent for autumn.
4. Fall Centerpiece
Baskets, especially ones with handles and/or low sides, make for stunning table centerpieces. I like to use handled baskets as centerpieces because they are so easy to just pick up and move when needed!
Start with a base, such as vintage books or linens. Then, move from back of the basket to front, adding more layers as you go.
The back can include tall items such as platters, plates, and vases. For the middle, you can use small jars or pedestal bowls. At the front, add small decorative accessories such as small plates, faux pumpkins, or acorns. Finally, add stems or florals as you see necessary!

5. Moveable Display
The last idea on the list is to create a moveable display with a basket. The purpose behind this is to be able to use the basket in multiple spots within your home. For this tip, baskets with handles work best.
For example, I curated this basket display for fall in my small entryway. I filled it with large-scale decor pieces to make a big impact. But, the beauty about this basket is that, if it happens to be in the way or if I want to use it in a different room, I can simply pick it up by the handle and move it wherever!
This is a super easy decor element to try if you are short on time or just want to whip something up in a jiffy without thinking too much about it.
